The Attorney General is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the State of California. That powerful office oversees the county District Attorneys, local law enforcement like Sheriffs and Police, and represents the People of the State of California in civil and criminal matters before all the courts of the state. The AG is supposed to protect Californians from fraudulent, unfair and illegal activities that victimize consumers and threaten the public safety and must enforce laws that safeguard the environment and our natural resources.
The Attorney General’s office employs 1100 attorneys and 3100 non-attorney employees. The only qualifications to run for the office are that one be a registered voter, admitted to practice law before the California Supreme Court for at least five years immediately preceding their election to office, and not be convicted of any felony like bribery, embezzlement of public money, extortion or conspiracy to commit those crimes.
The current and incumbent Attorney General of our state is Rob Bonta, who was appointed to that position in 2021 by Governor Gavin Newsom, when former AG Xavier Becerra was selected by President Biden to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Bonta was elected in 2022 and it is a 4-year term of office. An Attorney General may serve a maximum of two four-year consecutive terms. Rob Bonta last reported having well over $17 million in campaign funds.
Prior to his appointment to the office, he was a California Assemblyman. His wife, Mia, took over his position there when he became the AG. Prior to her election to the assembly, she helped establish non-profit organizations, some of which received large contributions from tech industries like Google.
Winning an election against Attorney General Rob Bonta is
Against all Odds!
